What is Chlorophyll?

Let’s start with a quick review. What is chlorophyll?

Chlorophyll, sometimes known as “the blood of plants,”  is a pigment found in plants and algae that plays a big role in photosynthesis. It contains vitamins and antioxidant properties. Chlorophyll is what makes plants green and helps them convert energy from the sun into food.

Chlorophyll is found in leafy green vegetables such as spinach, wheatgrass, alfalfa, spirulina, and more. It has a lot of health benefits which only adds to the many reasons to eat your veggies.

Benefits of Chlorophyll

There is still ongoing research on everything chlorophyll can help with, but the research that has been done so far shows that it can do wonderful things for the body. Below are five of the amazing benefits of chlorophyll.

1. Clear Skin

The first benefit of chlorophyll is clear skin. Recently, many Tik Tok videos, Instagram posts, and trending social media topics have revolved around chlorophyll and its supposed ability to get rid of acne, clear and detox your skin, and promote beauty.

In a study done in 2015

10 participants with acne topically applied a gel containing chlorophyll for three weeks and saw vast results in their skin’s improvement. Many people have found chlorophyll helpful with clearing up their skin. Chlorophyll may also help reduce inflammation on skin wounds and lessen or eliminate bacterial growth on skin.

Chlorophyll is also known for minimizing pores, treating acne, and helping skin look and feel younger.

But, the amazing skin benefits are not all that chlorophyll is known for. Chlorophyll is beyond more than just clear skin.

2. Blood Building

In addition to helping your skin, chlorophyll plays a role in helping your blood as well. Chlorophyll is known as a “blood builder,” because it strengthens and increases the number of red blood cells in the body.

The "blood of plants" oxygenates the body, promotes blood circulation, and aids in creating hemoglobin, a  protein found in red blood cells that carries oxygen to the lungs and tissues and is what makes your blood red.

Chlorophyll actually has a very similar molecular structure as hemoglobin. Both contain oxygen, nitrogen, carbon, and hydrogen.

The only difference is that hemoglobin is centered in iron and magnesium is in the center of chlorophyll. Both chlorophyll and hemoglobin are essential to life, plants can’t get energy without chlorophyll, and we can’t get oxygen carried throughout the body without hemoglobin.

Chlorophyll increases the production and effectiveness of hemoglobin as well.

3. Post injury/Cell rebuilding

Another reason to eat green vegetables comes with the third benefit of chlorophyll, namely immunity strengthening.

This anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, alkaline, and nutrient rich superfood helps promote cell growth, strengthens cell immunity, and aids in cell activities.

Chlorophyll also can aid in wound healing and cell rebuilding, making it a miracle worker in illnesses and injuries.

Chlorophyll provides cells with energy, thickens and strengthens cell walls and plays a part in protecting the body from harmful pathogenic bacteria or viruses. It has also been known to be helpful in fighting carcinogens in the body, reducing cancer risks.

4. Detoxifying Properties

Chlorophyll is a great detoxifying agent. It is a chelating herb, meaning that it helps rid the body of harmful metals or mercury. It is very efficient in helping our bodies get rid of toxins and impurities, balance the ph level, and cut inflammation.

It can improve gut flora, promote liver health, and aid the lymphatic system in draining out toxins.

Chlorophyll's purification properties are a big reason many people do chlorophyll detoxes and have been using it as a way to cleanse the body.

5. Chlorophyll Provides energy

Not only does chlorophyll work to provide energy to plants but consuming chlorophyll gives us energy as well.

Extra energy, and overall wellness are some other benefits of chlorophyll.

“Chlorophyll is the pigment that plants use to carry out photosynthesis - absorbing the light energy from the sun, and converting it into plant energy. This energy is transferred into our cells and blood when we consume fresh greens.”

Linda Page- American Naturopathic Medical Association

How to consume more chlorophyll

The first and foremost way of getting more chlorophyll into your diet is by eating leafy green chlorophyll containing vegetables. These include:

  • Spinach

  • Spirulina

  • Wheatgrass

  • Alfalfa

  • Asparagus

  • Broccoli

  • Collard greens

  • Seaweed

  • Kelp

  • Parsley

  • Green grapes

  • Kiwis

  • Avocado

Typically the darker the green color the more chlorophyll a fruit or vegetable has.

Chlorophyll supplemnts

Chlorophyll Supplements

Chlorophyll also comes in supplement form, which can be an easy way to add it into your diet. One thing to remember though is that no supplement will replace a healthy diet. Eating nutrient rich foods high in chlorophyll will have the most benefit to you.

The chlorophyll supplements can add to and supplement a good diet. They come in capsule, powder, or liquid form.

You may have seen liquid chlorophyll in health food stores or advertised online. The liquid chlorophyll or sometimes called chlorophyll water is actually made with chlorophyllin, a water soluble derivative from chlorophyll that is said to be easier to absorb.

Chlorophyll water doesn't always have the most pleasant taste, so capsule supplements are sometimes a better option.

There are also many ointments and creams with added chlorophyll in as well. Some of Dr. Christopher’s herb formulas contain chlorophyll as well.

Final Verdict

What is the final verdict? Is chlorophyll worth the hype?

The “blood of plants,” can do wonders for skincare, blood, cell growth and strength, helping get rid of toxins, and providing our bodies with added energy. Just like it is an essential part for a plant to live, chlorophyll is an essential nutrient that we need as well.

While research is still ongoing to learn all of the great benefits that chlorophyll has to offer, many are already known and people are experiencing the amazing power this nutrient offers.
